tornju Pazinske tvrđave, zavjerenici Mathias Sandorf, Stjepan
Pod
akustičnim svodovima drevnog pazinskog Kaštela do Sandorfa su
doprli zvuci ljudskog razgovora.
silazak niz kamene zidine. Vani bjesni oluja, munje povremeno
osvjetljavaju duboki kanjon Pazinske jame. Sandorf i Bathory uspijevaju
ponor, kadli ih udar groma odbaci u dubinu.
Limskom kanalu, nadomak Rovinja. Bili su spašeni, bar nakratko. Ovako
je Jules Verne opisao zbivanja u pazinskom Kaštelu i Pazinskoj jami u
romanu Mathias Sandorf, objavljenom 1885. godine. Pazinska epizoda
Sandorfu. Od tada, svake godine krajem lipnja u Pazinu obilježavamo
DANE JULESA VERNEA.

Why are there "Jules Verne Days" in
Pazin?
The date was June 26, 1867, and locked in the
tower of the Pazin fort, the conspirators Mathias Sandorf, Stjepan
Bathory and Ladislav Zathmar were awaiting sunrise – the time set for
their execution – having been sentenced to death by the Austrian
summary court. They had already accepted their fate, when voices carried
through the night gave them hope of a different outcome. The sounds of a
conversation came drifting along the acoustic vaults of the Castle to
Sandorf’s ears. From the muffled words they gathered that they had
been betrayed! This gave rise to a wish to escape and to a desire for
revenge; they broke through the bars separating them from the outside
world, grabbed hold of the lightning rod near the window and used it to
lower themselves down the stone wall into the depths below. A storm was
raging and flashes of lightning briefly illuminated the deep canyon of
the Pazin Abyss. Although Sandorf and Bathory managed to escape down the
lightning rod, Zathmar’s attempt was thwarted by the guards
Sandorf and Bathory continued their descent along the lightning
rod deeper and deeper into the threatening abyss, when suddenly a bolt
of lightning struck, throwing them down into the depths. They plummeted
into the swollen waters of the Pazinčica River,
which swept them away and down into the bowels of the earth. They stayed
afloat for six hours grasping to a log and then finally saw the light of
day in the Lim Fjord not far from Rovinj. They were saved – if only
for a short while! This is how Jules Verne described the events at the
Pazin Castle and the Pazin Abyss in his novel “Mathias Sandorf”
published in 1885. The episode in Pazin was crucial to the destiny of
the novel’s hero; it determined his quest for revenge and his search
for those who betrayed him, it gave to the narrative the motivating
factor, which would take the plot and the characters through hundreds of
pages to the moment when destiny is fulfilled on the island of
Antekirtta To commemorate this literary event which took place in the
novel “Mathias Sandorf” on the exact day of June 26, 1867, “Jules
Verne Day” was organised for the very first time in Pazin on June 26,
1998 to rekindle interest in Jules Verne and his work, both here at
home, as well as abroad, and to highlight the link between Jules Verne
and Pazin, a link that resulted in the Pazin-Rovinj episode in
“Mathias Sandorf”. Every year since then, at the end of June, Pazin
celebrates the JULES VERNE DAYS |
